Atlantic Cod Gadus morhua Synonyms: Torsk (Nr.), Morue (Fr.), Bacalao (Prt.)
In the last few years cod farms have disappeared as the fishing resumed due to the recovery of the wild stocks. But 20 years ago the situation was the reverse as over-fishing bought one of the worlds most abundant fish to the brink of extinction. I was employed in the mid ’90’s to develop Cod hatchery methods for Sea Forrest Plantation, a Newfoundland company. The success of the project was due to developing a method for feeding rotifers coming out of a 25oC mass culture to larvae grown at 10o The added bonus was that through the new process the rotifers had extremely high DHA levels.
The pioneering work on cod took me to Norway and Chile and Canada where, apart from working with cod I worked with other cold water species such as Hake (Merluccius australis), Haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus), Sablefish (Anoplopoma fimbria) and Patagonian Toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides)
